Resin driveways in Wallington laid as a smooth, bound surface with no loose stones. Natural aggregate mixed with clear resin and trowelled over a solid base, finished flush with edges and manhole covers.
Resin bound means the stone is mixed with resin first, then trowelled down as one layer. It is smooth, permeable and stays put. Resin bonded is resin spread first with stone scattered on top, which gives a rougher, non slip finish but sheds loose grit. Bound is the usual choice for driveways.
More Information
Resin is only a surface layer, so it needs something solid underneath. That is usually fresh tarmac or concrete laid over a compacted stone base. If an existing drive is sound and level, resin can sometimes go straight over it. Any cracks in the base will eventually show through.
Resin needs a dry day and a surface with no standing water on it. Once trowelled, it is usually walkable within hours and ready for a car after about a day, depending on the temperature. Cold weather slows it down. We book resin work around the forecast rather than risk a poor finish.
Resin bound surfaces are permeable, so rainwater passes through the surface rather than running off it. That normally keeps the drive within permitted development and avoids a planning application. The base underneath has to be permeable too for the whole build-up to drain properly.
Fifteen to twenty years is a fair expectation on a properly built base. The surface stays smooth and weed free because there are no joints for seeds to sit in. Sweeping it and rinsing it down occasionally is all the upkeep it needs. Oil spills are best cleaned off quickly.
It can if the existing tarmac or concrete is sound, level and free of cracks. We check the condition first, because resin follows whatever is underneath it. Block paving is not a suitable base, as the joints move independently and the movement eventually shows on the surface.
Resin is the newest surface we lay and has grown a lot in the last ten years. We have been paving in Wallington for over 40 years, so we treat it the same way we treat everything else: the base decides the result. A resin drive put over a weak or cracked base will fail no matter how well the top is finished.
