Tarmac driveways in Wallington laid hot and rolled while warm for a solid, even surface. Good for long drives and shared access, edged to stop spreading and usually ready to drive on the next day.
Tarmac covers a large area quickly and works out well on long or wide drives where block paving would take much longer to lay. It gives one continuous surface with no joints, which is easy to sweep and clear in winter. Shared access roads are often done in tarmac for the same reason.
More Information
Tarmac arrives hot and has to be spread and rolled before it cools, so the laying day runs to a tight schedule. It goes down in a base course and then a finer wearing course on top. Rolling compacts it and closes the surface, which is what keeps water out of it.
Tarmac needs something holding it at the sides or the edges crumble over time. We set block edging, kerbs or a concrete haunch along the boundary before laying. A brick edge course also breaks up the look of a large tarmac area and ties it in with the house.
STILL NOT SURE?
Usually the day after it is laid, once it has cooled and hardened. Avoid turning the steering wheel while the car is stationary for the first few weeks, and keep heavy loads and props off it. In hot weather a fresh surface stays soft a little longer.
Fifteen to twenty years is normal when the base is right and the edges are properly held. Cracks and potholes usually mean water has got into the base rather than a fault in the tarmac itself. Small areas can be cut out and patched without redoing the whole drive.
Yes, where the existing surface is stable and the levels allow it. An overlay has to leave enough height at the doorway and the garage threshold, so it is not always possible. If the old drive has sunk or the base has failed, digging out is the better option.
Tarmac was most of the driveway work when we started out 40 years ago, and it is still what we recommend for larger areas around Wallington and south London. It is quick to lay, straightforward to repair and stands up to daily use. The work is all in the preparation and the rolling.
